June 24, to July 20, 2012-  Teens - Ages 14-19
(Fall 2012,  High school freshman and up)

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Students: 
Please be sure to get the complete application packet.
Let us know if you wish to receive it via e-mail or through the U.S. postal service.

The application packet contains all of the forms, current fees,  program and
audition information that you need.) 

We are very happy to answer any questions you may have on the audition material or the audition process. 
Please be sure that you are well-prepared and that you have read all of the requirements thoroughly. 
Be sure to schedule your auditions early or send in your videotaped/ dvd audition early!

ACTORS
TWO MONOLOGUES  (one serious, one comedic) - MAXIMUM OF SIX MINUTES FOR BOTH.   Monologues can be both contemporary (all playwrights post 1920’s) or one contemporary, one classical (from Greeks, Shakespeare, Restoration period and up – including Ibsen, Strindberg, Shaw, and Chekov). 
PICK PIECES CLOSE TO YOUR AGE RANGE.   
BE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE ENTIRE PLAY.
ALL PIECES SHOULD BE  THOROUGHLY MEMORIZED. 
Keep your audition simple – no more than one small hand-held prop (if needed – or no props at all) and no costumes.    Be prepared to discuss the plays.


MUSICAL THEATRE ACTORS
TWO SONGS (ONE BALLAD, ONE UP-TEMPO) - both songs can be from a Broadway musical, or one from a musical, and one classical piece.  Please sing the entire songs.  Be sure that you know the musical and that the songs are age appropriate.   Please bring a recorded accompaniment.  
Please try to show in one of the songs that you can move well,  or that you can dance.  It does not have to be a specifically choreographed piece but the movement should be organically connected.  
ALSO REQUIRED IS A CONTEMPORARY MONOLOGUE FROM A PLAY (MUST BE A MINIMUM OF THREE MINUTES  )
PICK PIECES CLOSE TO YOUR AGE RANGE.,  BE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE ENTIRE PLAY (be prepared to discuss the plays),
ALL PIECES SHOULD BE  THOROUGHLY MEMORIZED..
DANCER/ACTORS
Simple dance piece set to music or poetry, or a story with narration (ballet, jazz, tap, modern, or ethnic style) - minimum of four minutes.   Please combine words, music, and movement into the whole piece. 
ALSO REQUIRED IS A CONTEMPORARY MONOLOGUE FROM A PLAY (MUST BE A MINIMUM OF THREE MINUTES  )
PICK A PIECE CLOSE TO YOUR AGE RANGE.,  BE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE ENTIRE PLAY (be prepared to discuss the play),  ALL PIECES SHOULD BE  THOROUGHLY MEMORIZED.. 
DIRECTORS
A THREE TO FIVE MINUTE CONTEMPORARY MONOLOGUE FROM A PLAY IS REQUIRED. 
(MUST BE A MINIMUM OF THREE MINUTES  )
PICK A PIECE CLOSE TO YOUR AGE RANGE.,  BE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE ENTIRE PLAY (be prepared to discuss the play),
ALL PIECES SHOULD BE  THOROUGHLY MEMORIZED..
ALSO REQUIRED IS A TWO TO FOUR PAGE SCENE FROM A CONTEMPORARY PLAY.  Please prepare a written analysis (about one page) of how you would stage the scene  (for example:   what is the location and how would the set look, the period of the piece, the relationship of the characters, needs and goals in the scene of all the characters, motivations, set description,  costume description, etc.)  Please explain why you picked the play and why you want to direct this summer.  BE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE ENTIRE PLAY. 

PLAYWRIGHTS
A THREE TO FIVE MINUTE CONTEMPORARY MONOLOGUE FROM A PLAY IS REQUIRED.

ALL PIECES SHOULD BE  THOROUGHLY MEMORIZED..

ALSO, PLEASE SEND IN TWO SAMPLES OF WRITTEN WORK.    These can be either scenes, one-act plays, short stories, or other samples of creative writing.  Final requirement is a brief (about half a page) personal statement on why you would like to do playwriting this summer and what kind of writing experiences you have had.

PRIORITY CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WHO COMPLETE THE APPLICATION PROCESS BY APRIL 28th.

Please note that we will conduct interviews after each audition.
For students sending videotaped/DVD auditions,
we will call and conduct  a phone interview after we have reviewed your tape and application.

Thank you for applying to Summer Theatre Institute!
National & International Students:
We welcome audition videotapes/dvd's from national and international students. 
BE SURE TO GET THE COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET IN THE MAIL.

1.  Total time on tapes for audition pieces should be approximately 10-15 minutes. 
     (Monologues should be a minimum of 3 minutes.  We do not care if the monologue is long - however we do
       care if monologues are too short.  )
2.  Please pick age-appropriate material
3.  Please be sure that your pieces are thoroughly memorized.
4.  Be sure you have read the entire play and be prepared to discuss the play.  (Monologues should be taken from
        full-length published plays (NOT a musical and not short one-act plays.)
5.  Also required on DVD:  Please talk about yourself for about 10 minutes.    
         Please talk about a wide range of subjects that give us a good sense of who you are.
6.  Once we have received your tapes/dvd, we will call you for a phone interview.  You will be notified of
of your acceptance in the program as quickly as possible. 
7.  Be sure to allow postage time - Deadline to receive materials is  May 23rd.
